“Together with Mary”- as on the day of Pentecost! –Fr Sam Koonamplackil vc Logos
Fr Sam Koonamplackil vc – Word of God – Logos – Blessed Mother Mary’s union with God unites her to the tender mercies of God. She intercedes for all of us every moment. Why? The reason is that the very presence of the Mother of Christ is made meaningful whenever we ask for her intercession.
Why is it so important that we pray along with our Blessed Mother? What happened when all the apostles together with some women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well His brothers prayed in the upper room before the Pentecost?
Did we know that She is the “Supreme Masterpiece of the Holy Spirit” the Mother of the Church and therefore can obtain for us the Power of the HOLY SPIRIT?
St. Alphonsus Liguori says, “Mary obtains for us grace; for….it is the will of God to dispense through the hands of Mary whatever graces He is pleased to bestow upon us”. Thus praying to our spiritual Mother brings about in us a spiritual comfort and she can lead us to have a great intimacy with the Blessed Trinity. Therefore, when we pray to Mother Mary for a powerful intercession or as we pray to her, we can obtain an outpouring of the enlightening and strengthening gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Indeed she is the first woman, who, when greeted by angel Gabriel, was told “The Lord is with you.” Though perplexed, she continued to listen to the angel, (Lk 1:28-32) who revealed to her the mighty work of the Lord, but she just asked “How can this be since I am a virgin?” The angel Gabriel said to her (Lk 1:35) “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most high will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God” Mary then just said “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; Let it be with me according to your word”. At that moment she experienced the descent of the Holy Spirit and the Immaculate Conception [the gift of immunity from sin, (even original sin) accorded by the Father to her – CCC 491], was filled with full of grace. Thus she became the first person in the New Testament ever to have been possessed by the Holy Spirit. This gives us a clear understanding that Mother Mary was chosen well before, by the Almighty God from Heaven for various God experiences. Throughout her whole life as the Immaculate Conception to the moment of the Conception of Jesus and there on for 33 long years she was in constant communication with the Holy Spirit. She understood the mystery of the Holy Trinity better than anyone, an experience of the ultimate heavenly Divine Bliss. The virginal conception of Christ our Lord, the birth of the Catholic Church on the Pentecost which is the Mystical conception of the Body of Christ – yes, she was profoundly chosen to prepare the Apostles for the Pentecost.
What is Pentecost?
The fifty day period from Easter to the Pentecost Sunday commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles on the Pentecost day. The Harvest festival of the Jews celebrated on the fiftieth day after the second day of Passover, which in turn corresponds to the Hebrew Shabuoth.
After the crucifixion of Jesus the apostles were faithless, went ignorant about the Holy Spirit, denied Christ and were afraid of the happenings. But Mother Mary prayed from the day of Ascension until the day of the Pentecost, that the apostles would know the Holy Spirit, whom she already knew. While the apostles prayed and waited without knowledge, Mary prayed with the knowledge of the Paraclete.
(Acts 1:14) “All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with some women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well his brothers”. And on the Pentecost morning 120 faithful received the Holy Spirit. Through her, the Holy Trinity was revealed to the people of God. The Holy Spirit inspired Saint Luke to include these details for our benefit.
Dear believer in Christ, I would say, Mother Mary is a very humble witness for Christ. She was among those who thereafter (Acts 2:42) “…devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship to the breaking of bread and the prayers”. She will continue to pray for us, in this era as our “Co-Redemptrix”. She is the true, humble servant of our Lord and Savior whose objective is saving grace. So, when we pray along with her, the same effects brought about by the anointing of the Spirit upon the group of Apostles, can also come upon us as it is known that when we pray or spend time with people filled with the Holy Spirit we can be possessed by the Holy Spirit.
In the old testament (1Sam 10:1-13) significantly verse 5-6 “After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim at the place where the Philistine garrison is; there as you come to the town, you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the shrine with harp, tambourine, flute and lyre playing in front of them; they will be in a prophetic frenzy. Then the Spirit of the Lord will possess you, and you will be in a prophetic frenzy along with them and be turned into a different person”.
As prophesy is a charism, when we interact with the one who prophesies, there is a possibility of it being handed down to us, as well as, we being filled with the Holy Spirit. If we can spend time with the people filled with the Holy Spirit, we will be blessed. Like again in the New Testament, Lk 1:41-45 helps us to understand that Elizabeth became the first worshipper of the Divine Presence in the person of Holy Virgin Mary, who was possessed by the Holy Spirit, consequently Elizabeth and the child in her womb were filled with the Holy Spirit making it leap in ecstatic joy.
These are two instances which substantiate our learning and reveal why it is so important that we pray insistently along with Mary for a new Pentecost. For Mary is the “Masterpiece work of the Holy Spirit” and when we pray in union with the Mother, who is so united with the Holy Spirit that Jesus is the union’s blessed fruit, she can also definitely obtain for us the gift of the Holy Spirit and Jesus. The Holy Spirit will manifest a renewal in all of us – in our journey to salvation- to receive the gifts of the Paraclete in greater abundance. So that the blazing wind of the Holy Spirit may flow powerfully (Lk 24:49). The infilling is a gift offered to the children of God and is the “Power from on high” which Jesus promised to His disciples. The infilling or rekindling or baptism in the Holy Spirit is received through faith and prayer which we can obtain when we pray with Blessed Virgin Mary. And as a result we will get the power to overcome sin, become bold enough to witness Christ, draw divine comfort to solve all our problems and enjoy good health, peace and prosperity throughout our life.
Prayer : O God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; grant, we beseech Thee, that through His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life.
